Orkut recently changed the way they looks. It looks softer- I can’t think of any other word to describe the change. :p. I feel that the site looks more refined- in comparison to this look, the old one did seem a bit rough…. What do you feel about the change ? For better or for worse ?
I haven’t exactly been a great fan of Orkut- although I was one of the first persons to join. I feel people do mindless stuff there. Half of the scraps are complete crap. ” Hey, how is u ?’ or ” Do u want frandship ?” ” Pls replay me “. Waste of bandwidth and effort IMO.
One thing I do appreciate about the site- it is an effective way of finding out people whom you last had contact with a long, long time ago.
For reasons not too difficult to guess, Orkut has become the face of social networking in India. Facebook is slowly gaining ground, but it will take time to rival Google’s creation. All the rest- Hi5, Tagged and Zorpia to name the few have not managed to create even a dent in Orkut’s market share.
And now with the Adnan Patrawalla case, the site has received plenty of media and news attention. Debates and seminars are taking place everyday to discuss about the effects on Orkut on teens. I do not blame Orkut for what happened, but I do agree with the fact that the site is more popular that what it probably should be.
One thing is for sure, if Orkut does happen to be banned in India, the cyber cafe owners will be one pissed lot. Orkut receives more traffic in India, even more than WWE ( check Alexa and that one places Orkut quite high, and remember that many people in India still do not know what Alexa is). I have seen guys having no knowledge of computers coming in and trying to establish an e-mail ID so that they too can hop on to the Orkut bandwagon. The craze for Orkut doesn’t seem to have diminished- it has only increased after its launch.
